Secure Messaging For Franchise Businesses

franchise

Large franchises in the United States have been hit hard over the past year by security breaches with brands such as Dairy Queen, P.F. Changs, and Jimmy John’s being impacted. It’s probably not that surprising given the security challenges of having a wealth of confidential consumer information in a high number of geographically distinct locations with a lack of security personnel at those locations. Help is on the way. The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) recently partnered with the International Franchise Association (IFA) to help franchise businesses with basic cybersecurity strategy. It’s a positive development for security as a whole when two large industry groups team up in this manner. The IFA represents franchise owners from many well-known chains including 7-Eleven, Jiffy Lube, Papa John’s and KFC while the NCSA is backed by companies like Facebook, Google, Microsoft as well as the Department of Homeland Security.

In today’s world, even small and medium sized businesses require enterprise security solutions. Michael Kaiser, executive director of NCSA explains “Many [SMBs] are franchises that rely on computerized networks and digital records — making them extremely vulnerable to cyberattacks.” The NCSA also recently launched RE:Cyber, a cybersecurity resource center that helps SMBs who often lack the resources and tools to protect against ever-changing cyber threats.

RE:Cyber offers sound advice around how to get started with security and suggests asking these questions in order to identify threats to confidential information:

  • How do you store the information?
  • Who has access to the information?
  • How do you protect your data?
  • What steps are you taking to secure your computers, network, email and other tools?

When franchises think about protecting email, cloud-based secure messaging is the best option. It requires no hardware to install, no IT management and can be implemented in minutes. It’s a simple, quick-win solution, which is ideal for a franchise with many distinct locations. Cirius is unique in the industry for its flexible deployments that do not disrupt your existing network even if you have a high number of entities operating under a variety of domains, DLP policies and email programs (e.g. mix of on-prem and hosted email).
